The time has come to put an end to this practice of judicial appointment. Not because the Defendants are innocent, but because every Defendant is entitled to be tried by a Judge who is genuinely free from prejudice. If this principle is disregarded, the trial risks becoming nothing more than a formality that simply reaffirms convictions already formed long before the first hearing commenced.
