The House of Representatives (“House”) is currently discussing the Draft Bill on Palm Oil (“Draft Bill”), as part of the government’s 2017 priority-legislation program. [1] The Draft Bill was initiated by the House in a bid to strengthen the Indonesian palm-oil sector. [2] In a nutshell, the Draft Bill sets out a number of comprehensive provisions on the establishment of palm-oil businesses, land clearance for plantations, cultivation measures, the empowerment of individual farmers, the management of palm-oil products, business standardization and sanctions for non-compliance.Due to the wide-ranging nature of this framework, this edition of Indonesian Legal Brief (ILB) will limit its discussions to the following matters:
