Governance of Jakarta as the Capital of Indonesia - Law Enacted

It is a statement of the obvious that Jakarta plays an important role not only in terms of local governance at the provincial level but also governance at the national level as Indonesia's capital city. These dual roles have become increasingly important with greater levels of regional autonomy being afforded to all regions of which the special province of Jakarta is no exception. The greater emphasis on regional autonomy has made the previous regulatory framework governing Jakarta redundant and as suchLaw No. 34 of 1999was no longer relevant to the needs of Jakarta or Indonesia in 2007. Therefore, Law No. 34 of 1999 has been repealed and replaced byLaw No. 29 of 2007. This Law was passed and enacted on 30 July 2007 and has been in force since this date.
