The government has issued Presidential Regulation No. 59 of 2017 on the Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals (“Regulation 59/2017”) in a bid to meet the country’s commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (“SDG”). [1] In a nutshell, Regulation 59/2017 sets out national targets for the 2017-2019 period through the National Medium-Term Development Plan (Rencana Pembangunan Jangka Menengah Nasional 2015-2019)(“National Targets”). These targets are in line with the SDGs and should ensure sustainable economic welfare and prosperity for all, while protecting the planet and maintaining environmental quality. [2] SDGs and National TargetsThe SDGs encompass 17 global objectives, which are comprehensively set out under the Appendix to Regulation 59/2017. In order to meet these global objectives, the government has stipulated various National Targets which have been assigned with two main functions in mind, specifically: [3]
