Workers in the Informal Sector and Social Welfare Coverage

The latest Bureau of Statistics census results highlight that there are almost 17.5 million Indonesians engaged in the informal employment sector. This means that they work outside of any formal work or employment contract and are generally characterized as working for themselves or self-employed. As a consequence the majority of these workers do not have any social security coverage with respect to workplace accidents and death, old-age pension or retirement funds, or health cover. It is important to note that this Minister of Labor and TransmigrationRegulation, No. PER-24/MEN/VI/2006only applies to workers in the informal sector who work at their own risk or who are self-employed.
