The government has begun discussions on amending Regulation of the Minister of Law and Human Rights (“ HAM ”) No. 3 of 2013 on Procedures for Verification and Accreditation of Legal Aid Institutions or Community Organizations (“ Regulation 3/2013 ”). One of the issues is the anticipated buildup of legal aid organizations.
“The most crucial issue is the distribution of the number of legal aid organizations in each regency. We must ensure that these organizations do not cluster only in big cities or regency capitals,” said Constantinus Kristomo, Head of Center for Culture and Legal Aid at the National Law Development Agency (Bantuan Hukum Badan Pembinaan Hukum Nasional– “ BPHN ”), to Hukumonline.
The ideal number of legal aid organizations has not yet been determined, as it still needs to go through a study phase. The government targets to complete the revision of the regulation within this year.
“It must be studied by consultants, similar to the calculation of notary formations. The process is still long,” he said.
