BPOM Reviews Enforcement Provisions for Mandatory Nutri-Level Labelling on Food Products After the Transition Period

The Food and Drug Agency (Badan Pengawas Obat dan Makanan –"BPOM") is currently reviewing the enforcement provisions for the mandatory labelling of Nutri-Level on processed food products and ready-to-drink beverages after the transition period ends. The Nutri-Level labelling requirement is regulated under BPOM Regulation No. 10 of 2026 on Nutrition Information on Processed Food Labels ("PerBPOM 10/2026"), which was promulgated on June 17, 2026 and will become mandatory after a 24-month transition period.

Salsabila Nadien, a First Pharmaceutical and Food Control Officer at BPOM, stated that the agency is still discussing sanctions for products that fail to comply with the Nutri-Level labelling requirement after the transition period, including the mechanism for recalling such products. "We are still discussing this matter," she told Hukumonline.

According to Salsabila, during the transition period, BPOM is focusing on public outreach and encouraging businesses to begin implementing Nutri-Level labelling on their food products. The outreach includes guidance on calculating Nutri-Level and determining the applicable Nutri-Level category.

Nadien explained that Nutri-Level compliance will be supervised through both pre-market and post-market evaluations. At the pre-market stage, businesses are required to submit the level analysis results, calculation results, and the determination of the product's Nutri-Level category when registering their products. BPOM will then evaluate whether the declared category is consistent with the characteristics of the product.

"Once the product is already on the market, there will be a post-market evaluation to determine whether the Nutri-Level stated on the label is consistent with what was approved during the registration process," she said.
