The Commission VII of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (“DPR RI”) is currently considering amendments to Law No. 20 of 2014 on Standardization and Conformity Assessment (“Law 20/2014”). Chairman of Commission VII, Saleh Partaonan Daulay stated that the regulatory update is necessary to keep pace with developments in the industrial sector.

Saleh explained that developments in technology and industry have created a need for new standards that are not yet fully accommodated under the current regulatory framework. In addition, many domestic products are subject to standardization carried out collaboratively by the National Standardization Agency (“BSN”) and private-sector parties. Accordingly, strengthening the standardization framework is important to address the evolving needs of industrialization and to provide clear guidance for industry players.

“For example, take the electric vehicle industry. Its standardization involves electrical standards. The question is which standards should be applied and what form they should take to ensure that they meet current needs,” Saleh told Hukumonline.

Saleh further explained that the proposed amendments to the law also aim to ensure that national standardization does not merely serve as an administrative formality, but instead generates tangible economic benefits and contributes to state revenue.

“So that standardization is not merely a stamp of approval, but also generates economic benefits for the country,” he said.
