Deputy Chair of Commission VII of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (“DPR”), Evita Nursanty, has urged the Government to promptly mandate the application of Indonesian National Standards (“SNI”) to electric vehicle components, particularly batteries and charging infrastructure.
To date, the application of SNI to certain electric vehicle components remains voluntary. According to Evita, this situation creates a risk that manufacturers may compromise quality and safety standards in an effort to reduce production costs. This could ultimately create opportunities for low-quality electric vehicle products to circulate in the domestic market.
“The mandatory application of SNI to core components, such as batteries and charging infrastructure, plays a highly strategic role in ensuring consumer safety and efficiency, while also serving as a legitimate non-tariff measure to protect the domestic market from an influx of low-quality imported products,” she said.
Accordingly, the DPR is urging the relevant ministries to promptly follow up on the standards established by the National Standardization Agency (“BSN”) by making them mandatory standards. This measure is considered important to strengthen safety and quality standards while providing protection for consumers and Indonesia’s domestic electric vehicle industry.
