The parliament is highlighting the provision on the lifetime validity of halal certificates as stipulated in Regulation of the Government No. 42 of 2024 (" PP 42/2024 ") on the Organization of Halal Product Guarantee (" BPJPH "). This provision has the potential to eliminate periodic evaluations of halal products.
"This is dangerous because there's no guarantee that micro- small- and medium-scale enterprises (“ UMKM ”) will continue to operate properly, that’s why evaluation is required, perhaps every three months," said Abdul Wachid, Deputy Chairman of Commission VIII of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (“ DPR RI ”), to Hukumonline.
Without regular evaluations, there is no guarantee that products will consistently meet halal standards, even though having a set validity period for halal certificates is intended to maintain quality and consumer trust. Wachid also proposed that the Regulation of the Government should be revised. "Yes, it must be revised," he said.
