Indonesia’s House of Representatives (“ DPR RI ”) is once again deliberating Draft Bill (“ Draft Bill ”) on the Amendment to Law No. 8 of 1999 on Consumer Protection, as amended by Law No. 1 of 2026 on Criminal Adjustment (collectively referred to as “ Law 8/1999 ”). One of the matters under discussion concerns the strengthening of the institutional structure of the National Consumer Protection Agency (Badan Perlindungan Konsumen Nasional- “ BPKN ”).
“The strengthening of the BPKN’s institutional structure includes the possibility of extending its term of office from three years to five years. These are matters on which we are still seeking views and input from practitioners and academics,” said Herman Khaeron, a Member of Commission VI of the DPR RI, in an interview with Hukumonline.
Draft Bill on Consumer Protection, which has been carried over from the previous legislative period, will also determine the establishment of a new consumer protection institution. However, the DPR RI remains open to various proposals, including the possibility of merging the BPKN and the Consumer Dispute Resolution Body (Badan Penyelesaian Sengketa Konsumen- “ BPSK ”) into a single institution.
“Hopefully, it can be completed this year,” Herman said.
