The government is revising Law No. 20 of 2016 on Marks and Geographical Indications (“Law 20/2016”). The amendments aim to protect intellectual property and prevent claims by other countries.
“It is important to provide legal protection for intellectual property, both marks and Geographical Indications (“GI”), that we have,” said Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas.
He said that through this revision of the law, the government is trying to prevent other countries from claiming Indonesian products. The Ministry of Law is targeting Indonesia to become number one in Southeast Asia for GI registration among ASEAN countries.
“So that claims related to batik by neighboring countries will not be repeated,” said Supratman.
The revision of the Marks and GI Law is targeted for completion in 2025. “The Marks Law will undergo minor revisions,” said Supratman.
