Government is Drafting Revisions to the Citizenship Law

The government is currently preparing a Draft Bill on Citizenship (“ Citizenship Draft Bill ”). This regulation will address several crucial issues frequently faced by Indonesian citizens (Warga Negara Indonesia– “ WNI ”), including dual citizenship and the status of children born to mothers who are foreign citizens (Warga NegaraAsing– “ WNA ”).

“It is currently being discussed, including issues of loss of citizenship, stateless children, and protection for the diaspora abroad. The principle is to provide legal certainty and protect the rights of citizens,” said an official from the Directorate General of General Legal Administrative Affairs (“ Ditjen AHU ”) at the Ministry of Law to Hukumonline.

Furthermore, Ditjen AHU is also making adjustments to the Academic Draft (NA) and the Citizenship Draft Bill, including proposing the addition of supervisory substance by Civil Servant Investigators (PPNS) as part of efforts to strengthen the implementation of Citizenship Draft Bill.

“Just wait, because it will still be discussed further before being submitted to the House of Representatives for further deliberation,” he added.
