The government is drafting Regulation of the Government on the Management of Genetic Resources (Sumber Daya Genetik- “ SDG ”). This regulation specifically governs the sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of Indonesia’s biodiversity.
“We are currently preparing a draft Regulation of the Government related to access and benefit sharing from our biodiversity,” stated Rasio Ridho Sani, Deputy for Pollution and Environmental Damage Control.
He explained that Indonesia is a megabiodiverse country; however, its management has not been optimal. Consequently, other countries exploit these resources without providing benefits to the domestic economy.
On the other hand, the government is also drafting Regulation of the Government on the Protection and Management of Biodiversity (Rancangan Peraturan Pemerintah tentang Perlindungan dan Pengelolaan Keanekaragaman Hayati– “ RPP PPKH ”). This regulation addresses matters related to funding, supervision, and the strengthening of the implementation of areas critical to biodiversity.
“Our biodiversity is utilized by many parties abroad, yet there are no significant benefits for us. The regulation pertains to access and the sharing of benefits arising from the utilization of genetic resources,” said Rasio.
