The Government is currently preparing standardization requirements for the two-wheeled electric vehicle ecosystem. Septian Hario Seto, a Member and Executive Secretary of the National Economic Council (Dewan Ekonomi Nasional - “DEN”), stated that these standardization provisions are currently being reviewed by the Government through the Ministry of Industry (“Kemenperin”).
“It is being developed by the Government through the Kemenperin. The key technologies in electric motorcycles are the motor and the battery; these two components must be standardized,” Seto said.
He explained that standardization is necessary to accelerate the adoption of electric motorcycles, which currently lags behind four-wheeled electric vehicles. Standardization will cover the form as well as the quality of battery components and charging systems. With respect to batteries, the study on the implementation of standardization will apply not only to electric motorcycles using charging-based systems but also to those using battery-swapping systems.
In addition, Seto stated that the Government is also studying the implementation of incentive schemes to support the adoption of electric motorcycles, particularly in relation to battery pricing. He expressed hope that such incentives could first be introduced for online motorcycle taxi drivers before being extended to the general public.
