Discussions on the Draft Bill on the Amendment to Law No. 8 of 1999 on Consumer Protection (“Law 8/1999”) are ongoing. Minister of Trade Budi Santoso revealed that the academic paper (NA) and draft amendments to Law 8/1999 are still being prepared by Commission VI of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (“DPR RI”).
“It is still being processed by the DPR RI, there are several changes to the definition of end consumers,” Budi told Hukumonline.
The discussion of the 26-year-old regulation is included in the list of 2025 National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) based on a proposal from Commission IV of the DPR RI. The revision of Law 8/1999 aims to accommodate developments in the times and technology.
The current regulations are deemed inadequate to protect consumer rights, as there have been significant changes in consumer behavior and the market influenced by digitalization.
