The government has begun drafting a roadmap for National Carbon Trading. In the maritime sector, matters proposed in the draft include seagrass meadows, mangroves, and brackish swamps as part of the blue carbon sector.
"Seagrass and mangroves are the readiest to be traded. We don’t want what we have done to be unsellable. Moving forward, we must start drafting a roadmap," said Muhammad Yusuf, Director of Management of Coastal and Small Islands Utilization at the Directorate General of Marine and Spatial Management, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), to Hukumonline.
Mechanism for the implementation of Carbon Economic Value (Nilai Ekonomi Karbon– “ NEK ”) of seagrass and/or other ecosystems categorized as blue carbon may be applied using a performance-based payment mechanism carried out by ministries, regional governments, and business actors. Yusuf emphasized the need for concrete carbon trading data in order to achieve the targets.
