The Ministry of Environment (“MoE”) is revising Regulation of the Minister of Environment No. 2 of 2014 concerning the Affixation of Ecolabel Logo (“KemenLH 2/2014”). The new regulation will eliminate Type 2 ecolabels, or self-declared labels.

“In the current draft, there will no longer be any Type 2 ecolabels. Only Type 1 ecolabels based on national standards will remain,” stated Susy Nurmayanti, Intermediate Environmental Controller Expert at the Ministry of Environment. This measure is intended to address concerns regarding the validity of environmental claims.

Susy explained that Type 2 ecolabels have thus far frequently required only approximately 10% recycled content. Meanwhile, the government aims to promote higher standards, such as those applicable to Type 1 ecolabels, which require a minimum recycled content of 80% to 100%.

Under the revision, all ecolabeling schemes will eventually transition to Type 1 ecolabels based on the Indonesian National Standard (“SNI”). This measure is intended to ensure that the affixation of ecolabel logos becomes a more credible instrument in supporting the circular economy and assisting consumers in selecting products that are genuinely environmentally friendly.
