The Ministry of Industry (“Kemenperin”) has identified a number of policy plans that need to be implemented in order to maintain the competitiveness of the national steel industry. Director-General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment and Electronics (“ILMATE”), Setia Diarta, revealed the need for protection and the adoption of green industry for the national steel industry in order to maintain competitiveness with steel products from abroad.
Satya explained that protection for the domestic industry from unfair trade practices by other countries currently only focuses on upstream and midstream products. According to him, increased protection is needed through trade remedies that focus on downstream steel products.
“We also continue to conduct studies and continue to make proposals for several sectors that we still need (protection),” said Setia.
In addition to strengthening specific protection for downstream products, Setia added that the Indonesian National Standards (“SNI”) are important for national steel products. He said that increased protection and standards also need to be conducted in conjunction with efforts to develop green steel products through industrial carbon emission reduction actions.
