The Ministry of Industry (“Kemenperin”) is currently developing a single battery policy for two-wheeled electric vehicles. Setia Diarta, Director General of the Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industry (Industri Logam, Mesin, Alat Transportasi, dan Elektronika – “ILMATE”) at the Kemenperin, stated that the policy is intended to establish a standardized battery ecosystem, thereby facilitating battery swapping for users.
To implement the policy, the Kemenperin is revising the mandatory Indonesian National Standard (Standar Nasional Indonesia – “SNI”) for battery systems so that all electric motorcycle manufacturers can adopt battery specifications that are compatible with one another. “The SNI regulation currently under discussion concerns battery systems for Category L vehicles (two-wheeled vehicles) as part of the move toward a single battery policy,” he stated.
According to Diarta, the SNI will not only regulate safety aspects but also ensure interoperability across vehicle brands. This is intended to enable users to charge or swap batteries at different charging or battery-swapping stations without compatibility issues.
Diarta stated that the policy has entered the harmonization stage. The Kemenperin is also holding consultations with relevant associations to facilitate the prompt implementation of the policy across Indonesia’s electric vehicle industry.
