The Ministry of Industry (“Kemenperin”) is currently formulating a Draft Regulation of the Minister of Industry (“Draft Regulation”) on the Mandatory Implementation of Indonesian National Standards (“SNI”) for Lead-Acid Batteries (“Accumulators”). The regulation will require accumulators used in category M, N, O, and L vehicles to comply with SNI requirements. These categories include passenger transport vehicles, goods transport vehicles, towed vehicles or trailers, and motor vehicles with fewer than four wheels.
Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industries at the Kemenperin Setia Diarta stated that the Draft Regulation has entered the harmonization stage and is currently awaiting Presidential approval before its enactment. “We are only awaiting Presidential approval before the regulation can be enacted,” he told Hukumonline.
The mandatory standards cover requirements concerning accumulator capacity and performance, the ability to deliver the current required to start an engine, charge acceptance, and resistance to charging and discharging cycles. In addition, the SNI requirements regulate resistance to vibration and leakage, accumulator dimensions, terminal design, and product marking or labeling.
