The Ministry of Industry is restructuring regulations on steel raw materials that may be exposed to radioactive substances. The Director General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industries (Industri Logam, Mesin, Alat Transportasi dan Elektronika/ILMATE), Setia Diarta, stated that the Ministry is proposing a dedicated industrial regulation on the domestic trade of steel scrap.
“Our regulation proposes the establishment of rules for scrap that is traded domestically,” Setia said.
He explained that the large volume of steel scrap generated by domestic industries needs to be governed through a dedicated management framework. Setia further elaborated that such regulation should cover requirements prior to the release of scrap from storage facilities, special provisions for collection entities, and the processes involved in its distribution.
Although the regulation will apply to all industrial sectors that produce steel scrap, Setia emphasized that it will particularly tighten controls on the movement of scrap originating from medical waste. Scrap derived from medical activities will be required to have documentation certifying that it does not contain radioactive materials and that it originates from authorized medical radioactive activities.
