The Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (“KKP”) will develop Indonesian National Work Competency Standards (“SKKNI”) for blue carbon ecosystems. Hendra Yusran Siry, the Expert Staff of Minister of KKP for Ecology, stated that the SKKNI is necessary so that workers in the field have clear competency standards for carbon management.

“To strengthen these SKKNI, we also need to map out market needs and determine what the required work competency standards should look like,” said Hendra.

Hendra noted that the development of the SKKNI will be conducted in collaboration with the National Standardization Agency (“BSN”). The process begins with mapping market and industry needs to determine the required competencies. These competencies include measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV), ocean accounting, and coastal spatial planning.

According to Hendra, this mapping is necessary so that the Indonesian workforce can meet the high standards of quality and integrity set by the global carbon market. The development of the SKKNI is also part of the government’s efforts to prepare human resources as the blue carbon ecosystem and market continue to grow.
