Ministry of Public Works Prepares Standards and Regulations for Zero-Emission Buildings

The Ministry of Public Works (“PU”) is currently promoting the formulation of policy directions to accelerate the transformation of urban areas toward low-carbon development. This policy is guided by the strengthening of regulations and standards for environmentally friendly buildings, integrating three main standards: Zero-Emission Buildings, Smart Buildings, and Green Buildings.

This policy draft positions energy efficiency as a key aspect in the development of urban buildings. The changes are not limited to building standards but also encompass the processes of design, construction, and building operation. Deputy Minister of Public Works Diana Kusumastuti emphasized the need for cross-governmental coordination to ensure the implementation of these three concepts.

“The Ministry of Public Works continues to promote the adoption of zero-emission buildings, smart buildings, and green buildings. We must coordinate the steps needed to achieve this so that buildings become more efficient, low-carbon, and sustainable,” she emphasized.

In its implementation, this policy will be aligned with the green-blue infrastructure framework and a risk-based urban planning system. The Ministry of Public Works is also encouraging major cities, including DKI Jakarta, to serve as pilot projects or role models. In addition, the government has begun pioneering the National Urban Transformation Program in collaboration with relevant ministries and agencies as part of efforts to build climate-resilient cities toward Golden Indonesia 2045.
