The government is developing the methodology for National Registry System (Sistem Registri Nasional– “ SRN ”), a platform for data and information related to carbon trading in Indonesia, to meet international standards.
Franky Zamzani, Director of Resource Mobilization for Climate Change Control at the Ministry of Environment, stated that the guidelines for methodological principle are derived from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).
“However, the methodologies developed by international certification agency are more detailed, and each methodology is always tested and reviewed. Eventually, they are adopted as the method for calculation and claimed as the standard,” Franky told Hukumonline.
Certificates issued by international agencies are more marketable due to their high integrity. The ministry is expected to achieve those standards. “For the National Registry System, we also aim to develop it in a similar way,” said Franky.
The impact of methodological changes is expected to increase purchases, especially from foreign parties, in the carbon trading exchange. If Indonesia’s standards become more marketable, it will generate greater revenue for the country.
