The National Agency of Drug and Food Control (“BPOM”) is drafting new regulations that require business actors to provide more detailed information on the origin of ingredients and alcohol content. This draft regulation of BPOM replaces Regulation of the Head of BPOM No. HK.03.1.23.06.10.5166 of 2010 on the Inclusion of Information on the Origin of Certain Ingredients, Alcohol Content, and Expiration Dates on the Labeling of Drugs, Traditional Medicines, Dietary Supplements, and Food (“Regulation 3/2010”), to enhance product transparency.
“To ensure consumers’ right to accurate and objective information, including the implementation of halal certification,” stated Head of BPOM Taruna Ikrar.
According to documents obtained by Hukumonline, for products that are already made from halal ingredients but whose manufacturing process is still in the process of meeting halal standards (shared facilities), the following statement must be included: “made from halal ingredients and in the process of meeting halal standards.”
Business actors who violate this provision face tiered administrative sanctions ranging from written warnings, temporary suspension of production/import activities, suspension or revocation of the Circulation Permit, to orders to recall and destroy products from circulation.
“The harmonization process is currently underway,” he added.
