A member of Commission VI of Indonesia’s House of Representatives (“ DPR ”), Ilham Permana, has urged the Government to implement a sustainability certification requirement for raw water sources in the bottled drinking water (Air Minum Dalam Kemasan- “ AMDK ”) industry. The proposal was conveyed during discussions of the Working Committee (Panja) on the AMDK industry under Commission VI.
“[We] propose the issuance of a mandatory Indonesian National Standard (“ SNI ”) certification. It should not only cover product quality, but also require that the production process constitute a prerequisite for SNI certification,” stated Ilham.
According to him, the implementation of mandatory SNI for AMDK industry should not focus solely on product quality and production processes. He emphasized that the sustainability of raw water sources surrounding the manufacturing facilities should be made a principal prerequisite within such certification.
The policy is considered essential to ensure that the availability of clean water for surrounding communities remains safeguarded and is not adversely affected by industrial activities. It is expected that the operations of AMDK industry will be conducted in a sustainable manner without compromising the rights of local communities to access water resources.
