State Forestry Company (Perhutani) Corporate Secretary Sofiudin Nurmansyah said that in the plan to establish forestry regulations on carbon trading, his party proposed that forests could still be logged.
“We want the forests to be allowed to be logged. That’s the essence of it,” he told Hukumonline. “If logging is not allowed, then the forestry business will automatically be disrupted.”
Sofiudin added that, in principle, Perhutani is ready to engage in carbon trading, with Kalimantan set to be the target area. Currently, the draft regulations are still being finalized by the Ministry of Forestry.
Regulation of the President No. 98 of 2021 and Regulation of the Minister of Environment and Forestry No. 21 of 2022 regulate carbon trading governance, including restrictions on activities conducted by the holders of Forest Utilization Business Agreement to not cut down forests that have the potential to reduce carbon stocks.
