One proposal in the Draft Bill (“Forestry Draft Bill”) on the Amendment to Law No. 41 of 1999 on Forestry (“Law 41/1999”) is the existence of an integrated team for customary land affairs.
Member of Commission IV of the House of Representatives (“DPR”) Darori Wonodipuro said that so far, indigenous peoples have been recognized by the government provided that there is an issuance of Regional Regulation. This has become an obstacle because of the small number of such regulations issued.
“Going forward, we will change the system. If there is a request for customary land from indigenous communities, we will deploy an integrated team to the field. The integrated team will prepare a report for Commission IV of the DPR,” Darori told Hukumonline.
Parliament will follow up on the team’s findings by recommending whether the minister can issue or not issue customary land permits.
