Discussions on the Draft Bill on Climate Change Management (“Climate Change Management Draft Bill”) received input from a number of parties. The Director of the School of Environmental Sciences at the Universitas Indonesia, Supriatna, proposed incorporating research findings related to the climate crisis into the regulation.
He said that many universities have conducted research and even developed curricula related to climate change, including research on carbon emissions. “So, this research can be included in the Bill,” said Supriatna.
According to him, the existing research results can be further enriched with regulations concerning industry and public interests. In addition, a number of provisions in Law No. 32 of 2009 on Environmental Protection and Management, as amended by Regulation of the Government in Lieu of Law No. 2 Tahun 2022 tentang Cipta Kerja (collectively referred to as “Law 32/2009”) can also be integrated into the Climate Change Management Draft Bill.
“I see that a lot of research is not yet aligned with industry, and not much research is aligned with the interests of the community. Perhaps these policies should be incorporated into this Draft Bill. They must be included,” said Supriatna.
