The Indonesian Quarantine Agency (“Barantin”) has stated that it will adjust a number of quarantine protocols as part of the implementation of the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (“I-EU CEPA”).
“For sanitary and phytosanitary matters, we will create protocols between countries,” said the Head of the Legal and Public Relations Bureau of Barantin, Hudiansyah Is Nursal, to Hukumonline.
Nursal explained that the drafting of these protocols is necessary to regulate the procedures for exporting and importing agricultural commodities, including plants and animals, in order to meet Sanitary and Phytosanitary (“SPS”) standards. Given the high volume of agricultural trade between Indonesia and the European Union, it is important to draft more specific protocols for each commodity to ensure compliance with SPS requirements in both jurisdictions.
This protocol adjustment is expected to streamline the quarantine process and accelerate the flow of commodities between Indonesia and the European Union. “It will not cause any disruption. The main focus remains on facilitating export and import transactions and other related activities,” he added.
