The government is preparing a revision of Law No. 2 of 1981 on Legal Metrology, as amended by Regulation of the Government in Lieu of Law No. 2 of 2022 on Job Creation (collectively referred to as “Law 2/1981”). The revision aims to strengthen the supervision of measuring instruments and expand the scope of legal metrology beyond the trade sector.
“The current law does not yet cover public interest aspects related to measurement, such as health, environmental safety, and the monitoring and control of natural resources,” said Sri Astuti, Director of Metrology at the Ministry of Trade.
The revision is being conducted to align the national metrology system with developments in government governance, public protection needs, and advancements in measurement technology. Sri noted that the current regulations still have several shortcomings, ranging from institutional arrangements that are not yet integrated to governance that remains centralized.
The revision will also regulate the national strategy for legal metrology, the control of measuring instruments, and the supervision of Prepackaged Goods (BDKT). Additionally, the government is opening opportunities for business entities to participate in calibration and re-calibration activities to enhance the effectiveness of services.
