Following the bankruptcy of PT Sritex, the House of Representatives (DPR RI) is formulating several new draft laws under the 2025-2029 National Legislation Program (Prolegnas), one of which is the Clothing Bill (RUU Sandang) aimed at revitalizing the national textile industry.
Member of Commission VII of DPR RI, Bane Raja Manalu, explained that the drafting of the Clothing Bill will include provisions on investment protection, raw material supply, technology utilization, and restrictions on imported textile products. Indonesia currently lacks regulations for protecting the textile industry and related businesses.
"We aim to revitalize the textile industry by distinguishing between mass production sectors and culturally-based industries. This approach can enhance product quality and boost tourism," Bane told Hukumonline.com.
He cited how Japan promotes high-quality kimono products while preserving cultural elements, contributing to its tourism sector. Similarly, China enhances its mass production industry's competitiveness by leveraging technology to reduce production costs.
"Since there is an effort to revitalize the textile industry and it is similar to other bills, we might prioritize the Clothing Bill over the Industrial or Textile Bills included in Prolegnas," said Bane, who is also a member of the Legislation Body (Baleg) of DPR RI.
