The Legislative Body of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (“Baleg DPR RI”) is conducting discussions regarding the scope of protection for Indonesian Migrant Workers (“PMI”) in the Working Committee (Panja) meeting for the drafting of the Draft Bill on the Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers (“RUU PPMI”).
Member of Baleg, I Nyoman Parta, expressed the opinion that protection during work for PMI, which includes all migrant workers and their families, needs to have certain limitations. According to him, the category for Individual PMI with middle to upper economic status should be differentiated.
Individual PMI is a different category because they are not required to follow some of the procedures that general PMI usually have to undergo.
“Does that fall into the category of PMI as we have understood so far, those who are more middle class or even lower class? Of course, later there will be some limits set,” said Nyoman
Chairperson of Baleg, Bob Hasan, explained the need for further in-depth study of individual PMI and the scope of special protection for certain PMI categories. “This will be our next topic of discussion,” Bob added.
