The House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia (Dewan Perwakilan Rakyat Republik Indonesia – “DPR RI”) will soon deliberate the Draft Bill on Private International Law (“PIL RUU”). The regulation will contain eight principal subject matters.
“In line with the growing number of cases involving foreign elements, a specific law governing the fundamental principles of private international law is urgently required,” stated Hinca Panjaitan, a member of Commission III of the DPR RI.
The principal matters to be regulated include civil law subjects, family law, property and proprietary rights, inheritance, torts, the international jurisdiction of Indonesian courts, and the enforcement of court judgments. The draft bill will serve as guidance for judges in handling cross-border civil disputes.
The PIL RUU is a government-initiated bill. It consists of 10 chapters and 70 articles, accompanied by an academic paper comprising 320 pages.
“The Special Committee for the PIL RUU will soon work intensively within a relatively short period of time together with the government,” Hinca stated.
