The loss from food loss — or food that goes to waste at various stages of production, processing, storage, and distribution before reaching consumers — in Indonesia amounts to Rp 500 trillion per year.
Member of Commission IV of the House of Representatives (DPR), Riyono, suggested the establishment of a special agency to help reduce such cases. This proposal is related to the revision of Law No. 18 of 2012 on Food ("Law 18/2012").
“There are no regulations on food loss in the Food Law. Therefore, we want to include the establishment of a National Food Bank,” he told Hukumonline.
The purpose of establishing the agency which will handle technical matters, is to ensure that the food supply is guaranteed to be halal, safe, of good quality, and to prevent food loss.
