Mari Elka Pangestu, Vice Chairperson of the National Economic Council (Dewan Ekonomi Nasional- “ DEN ”), stated that several policies have been identified as needing improvement to strengthen the domestic textile industry. The government still needs to enhance trade safeguarding instruments or trade remedies against threats from foreign textile products.
“We agree that the use of trade remedies must be improved and strengthened. The Ministry of Finance has previously conveyed that the process will be expedited and improved. Currently, the process takes too long,” Mari said to Hukumonline.
Safeguards need to be applied not only to finished products but also to raw materials. Additionally, the DEN advocates for certainty regarding The Provincial Minimum Wages (UMP), which often becomes an issue in this industry.
Currently, DEN’s efforts focus on identifying challenges—both regulatory and non-regulatory—faced by investors and buyers seeking to enter the domestic textile industry.
“At the National Economic Council, we also facilitate and study investors and buyers who want to enter labor-intensive industries. We strive to address their issues,” she said.
